The Ethereum Foundation’s Shapella announcement scheduled activation for 12 April 2023. The name joins Shanghai, the execution-layer upgrade, with Capella, the consensus-layer upgrade.
The package enabled validator withdrawals from the Beacon Chain to the execution layer and added other protocol changes. The announcement also described changes to the Engine API, which connects the two layers.
Its execution-layer list included a deprecation warning for SELFDESTRUCT. The notice explicitly distinguished that warning from a change in the instruction’s behaviour at that time. That distinction matters when reading older technical coverage: a warning about a later change is not the change itself. This brief preserves the historical context of the announcement.
